The Rocky Mountain region of the United States has always played its part when it comes to natural resources and general commerce. Now, as we move into the future, the Rocky Mountain area is being called upon again for a new type of resource: Rocky Mountain green power. That?s right--the mountainous region of the United States is generating more than just precious metals and a source of water. Now we?re getting clean, safe, renewable energy from there as well.

To understand how the Rocky Mountain region is providing us with green energy, perhaps it?s best to start with the specific types of green energy that we?re seeing more and more of. Rocky Mountain green power relies on two main components: wind power and hydroelectricity. There have also been a few instances where geothermal energy was solicited, but those are far and few between.

For now, we?re going to focus on the two main aspects of eco-friendly energy.

Because of their elevation, the Rocky Mountains are an excellent source of wind power. Large gusts and powerful gale winds whip through the region, creating the perfect area for wind farms to take shape. On these wind farms, turbines are spun by the abundant wind channels of the region to generate electricity that can be supplied to homes all around the area.

Turbines can put out megawatts of energy per year, or about enough to satisfy the energy requirements of about 1,500 homes. With the growing popularity of this environmentally friendly energy alternative, we can look forward to an increase in the number of wind energy projects in the Rocky Mountains over the next three to five years.

Hydroelectricity has also become popular in the region because of the many free flowing rivers that wind through the terrain.

Because rivers flow in the same direction, we often encounter intersections of rivers where we can set up dams or hydroelectric water wheels. That?s exactly the case in the Rocky Mountains as well. Even waterfalls add to this effect, generating a forceful flow of water that can easily churn a water wheel.

By combining these two excellent methods of green energy collection, we?re able to harness naturally occurring elements in the Rocky Mountain region to produce some of the cleanest energy around. Rocky Mountain green power continues to grow as we move forward with new venture. It?s predicted that by the year 2015 the state of Colorado will draw the majority of its green energy from the abundant sources located in the Rocky Mountain region.
