The No.20 Clemson Tigers (9-3, 6-2 ACC) and the No.5 Virginia Tech Hokies (11-1, 7-1 ACC) will do battle in the 2011 NCAA college football predictions ACC Championship Game at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday at 8:00pm ET on ESPN. Clemson beat Virginia Tech earlier this season 23-3 and the Hokies would love nothing more than to get the last laugh in a game that holds a lot more weight than their regular season meeting did. All the trends are pointing towards a Virginia Tech victory here, as the Hokies have won their last 14 games played in the state of North Carolina. On top of that, Virginia Tech has also won five of their last six meetings against Clemson, while the Tigers have lost three of their last four games overall, Virginia Tech is making its fourth appearance in the ACC title game and they will be entering this game on a seven game winning streak. Most of the free college football predictions for this game have the Hokies winning this game and covering as 7-point favorites and although I expect Virginia Tech to be crowned as the 2011 ACC Champions, I see a much closer game than that.
Sophomore quarterback Logan Thomas has been the key for Virginia Tech this season and it has been obvious during the Hokies? seven-game winning streak. Thomas has thrown for 14 touchdowns, while adding nine through the ground and his 10 overall rushing touchdowns in the 2011 NCAA football season are a new record for a quarterback during the Frank Beamer era. The Tigers were also benefiting from some great quarterback play out of redshirt sophomore Tajh Boyd earlier on the year, but, that is explosiveness has disappeared in recent weeks. Last week against South Carolina, Boyd was 11 for 30 for just 83 yards and that type of performance is not going to make it any easier for the Tigers to cover their NCAA college football odds as 7-point underdogs in this game.
The Hokies have to prepare for this game as if they are going to get the Tajh Boyd that made their lives impossible earlier in the year. This is a young Clemson team that has played 29 freshmen in total this season and although that is an advantage for the Hokies, Virginia Tech cannot act like they are going to win this game because of they are better on paper. In Virginia Tech?s history, they have twice before had a rematch against a team that they lost to during the regular season, and both times it was against Boston College during the 2007 and 2008 seasons. The Hokies won both of those games and I expect them to keep that trend alive with a win against Clemson on Saturday night, although it won?t be as easy as some odds-makers are predicting that it will be.
