A young Calgary girl battling cancer caught the attention of the world after getting a hug from a "princess" during this summer's royal visit.
Now she has the best news possible just in time for Christmas ? her cancer is in remission.
Six-year-old Diamond Marshall has been battling a rare form of adrenal cancer. She had surgery Monday to remove tumours and biopsies are now showing she is cancer free.
It's all her family could ever hope for this holiday season.
"We're calling this a miracle," said her dad, Lyall Marshall. "It's a Christmas miracle for our family. To say you're cancer free at this point and time is fabulous."
In the summer, the young girl made headlines internationally after being chosen to hand flowers to the Duchess of Cambridge ? Catherine Middleton, otherwise known as Kate.
Diamond wanted to meet a real princess after watching the royal wedding from her hospital bed.
She got her wish and met Kate and her husband Prince William, Duke of Cambridge, as they arrived in Calgary for their royal tour. The meeting was organized by the Children's Wish Foundation with an invitation from Alberta's Office of the Lieutenant Governor.
Though Kate is technically a duchess, not a princess, the distinction was unimportant to Diamond, who gave the royal a bouquet of flowers and a homemade gift.
Before the gifts, Diamond threw her little arms around her real-life princess in a moment of spontaneity.
The girl's father said the hug not only melted his heart, but the hearts of many people around the world.
"I think we can all believe in miracles and dreams and I think that hug really helped in more ways than one. It's fabulous to have the whole city of Calgary behind you, and there's nothing better than to say, 'Hey, the whole world wants you to get better kid,'" Marshall said.
But for this surgery, Diamond also called on Santa.
"She's asked to be cancer free for Christmas," her dad said. "It was one of her wishes. She has a Santa list and another list ... and we're happy to say we think that both will come. So she's looking forward to Santa and I think Santa's going to be very good to her."
If all continues to go well she'll be able to head home next week.
While it appears Diamond got her Christmas wish, she still has a long road ahead of her.
She'll be back at Alberta Children's Hospital in late January to undergo a high dose of chemotherapy and get a stem-cell transplant to try to ensure she's kicked her cancer.
"We're just going to hope and pray that this keeps on going as well as it's been going," said her father. "She just keeps showing amazing resilience and strength. She's a fabulous little girl. I'm so proud of her."

The federal government has vowed to keep up its fight against the European Union's emissions trading scheme that could cost Canadian and international airlines billions of dollars in EU airspace emissions fees.
Yet emboldened by the European Court of Justice's Dec. 21 decision, the European Commission told airlines to get ready for the new law, sparking fears of an international trade war.
"At this time of economic uncertainty, actions should not come at the price of international aviation, which plays such an important role in all of our economies," Transport Minister Denis Lebel wrote in a Dec. 8. letter to Slim Kallas, vice-president of the EU Commission for Transport.
"I've listened closely to the concerns expressed by Canada's industry and have concluded that taking scarce funds from the sector in the current economic climate would not be the best route to achieving emissions reductions," he continued.
Lebel also emphasized Canada's opposition to the EU's "unilateral" approach to tackling emissions in the airline industry.
He urged his European counterpart to abandon the plan and to join the international community in developing a global approach for tackling emissions in the airline industry under the auspices of the International Civil Aviation Organization, a UN agency. Action plans from ICAO members are expected in June.
On Dec. 21, the European Court of Justice rejected the legal challenge by U.S., Canadian and international airlines that called the EU proposal a violation of several international aviation agreements by imposing unfair penalties on non-EU carriers.
Under the EU scheme, all airlines, regardless of their country of origin, would have to pay for 15 per cent of the polluting rights accorded to them in 2012, the figure then rising to 18 per cent between 2013 and 2020.
Airlines say the move would cost them billions of dollars.
Canada is joined by 26 countries, including the U.S., China, Brazil and India, which signed a joint-ICAO declaration in September opposing the plan. They also urged the EU to join the international community to develop a global emissions plan.
Upon hearing the decision, the National Airlines Council of Canada expressed its "disappointment," saying it will begin talks with the Canadian government and other aviation powers "in earnest," NACC president George Petsika told Postmedia News.
"That's what we do in a free and democratic society," he said.
Charging fees for non-EU planes flying in EU airspace is "illegal under international law because emissions produced in international air space over high seas, that territory does not belong to the EU," Petsikas said. "This violates the principles of sovereignty under international law."
Echoing Lebel's earlier position, Petsikas said the matter should be brought before the ICAO.
Last month, the ICAO urged the EU to exclude foreign carriers from the new rules.
"All parties should agree to a global approach, not just one country or one territory, not just the EU dictating the rules of other countries," Petsikas said.
Meanwhile, a trade war could soon be on the horizon after strong language from both sides.
The European Court of Justice defended the EU's approach as "valid," and that it "infringes neither the principles of customary international law at issue nor the Open Skies Agreement" covering trans-Atlantic flights.
Non-EU airlines could "choose" whether to make commercial flights to and from EU airports, the court said.
"After crystal clear ruling today, EU now expects U.S. airlines to respect EU law, as EU respects U.S. law," EU climate change commissioner Connie Hedegaard wrote on Twitter.
Earlier this month, the U.S. voiced threats of reprisal should the EU move forward with the program.
In a Dec. 16 letter to EU officials, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton listed 43 nations also opposed to the EU proposal.
"Halt or, at a minimum, delay or suspend application of this directive," she wrote. "Re-engage with the rest of the world. The United States stands ready to engage in such an effort. Absent such willingness on the part of the EU, we will be compelled to take appropriate action."
In October, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill directing the U.S. government to forbid American carriers from taking part "in any emissions trading scheme unilaterally established by the European Union."
Underscoring the potential for a significant trade row, in early in June, China blocked an order by Hong Kong Airlines for billions of euros worth of Airbus aircraft.
But it's not only non-EU parties that are worried about the new law: European airlines also have expressed fears of a damaging trade war.

ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) ? A runaway electric cart raced unmanned from an end zone to midfield at Cowboys Stadium and plowed into several people after a high school championship game Saturday night, bowling over the winning head coach and several others.
An emergency medical technician who declined identification told The Associated Press that one man who was conscious and talking was taken to a hospital with an apparent leg injury. The Arlington medical technician said he had no further information on the man's condition but several others hit or grazed by the cart were checked out by emergency workers as they sprawled stunned on the field.
Separately, a Texas sports league official said a male staffer also was injured, not seriously, when the cart raced across field in a matter of seconds during onfield celebrations after the Texas 5A Division II football championship game. That official also declined identification.
The cart toppled Spring Dekaney coach Willie Amendola, who was being interviewed near the Cowboys midfield star, along with several others clustered about him moments after Dekaney had beaten Cibolo Steele 34-14. Hundreds of people were scattered about the field or were in the stands at the time.
Broadcast footage showed a stunned Amendola falling backwards into the cart's passenger seat as it continued rolling. He appeared to try unsuccesfully to gain control of the cart, spinning the steering wheel with his left hand, before rolling out onto the artificial turf. As he tumbled out, a pursuing field worker hopped aboard and stopped the cart quickly.
"We have a disturbance down the field. Apparently one of the carts on the field got loose and I think there have been some folks injured in this. Oh my! That's like a runaway cart there. And it finally took someone to stop it," a shaken announcer is heard commenting on air as the cart rolled and then stopped. "That's a scary thing."
Others were seen on the ground afterward as emergency personnel rushed up, including one man sprawled motionless while someone cradled his head. Nearby, others helped a visibly stunned man to his feet.
It was unclear why or how the cart began moving under its own power. Stadium workers were picking up fluorescent orange sideline yard markers and pylons in one of the end zones after the game when the cart unexpectedly took off.
During its race across the field, the cart appeared to roll over the legs of some of those onfield. Afterward, televised broadcasts showed Amendola conducting another interview with a small streak of blood on his left forearm.
An Arlington police dispatcher as well as a spokeswoman for Texas Health Arlington Memorial Hospital, where at least one injured person was reported taken, told AP they had no information to release early Sunday.

GUATEMALA CITY ? Dire poverty, gang violence and drug trafficking create a sense of isolation among some people in Guatemala City.
Squalor and poverty are constants.
Many motorists in the city of 3 million hide behind tinted windows. Hair stylists work behind barred doors. Even packed buses, some with passengers hanging from the windows, carry guards.
Many analysts say the violence is a legacy of the 36-year civil war that ended in 1996. During the war, about 200,000 people were killed, mostly by state forces and paramilitary groups.

Amazon.com said on Thursday it is selling more than one million Kindle devices a week, an unusual disclosure from the largest Internet retailer that comes in the wake of some negative reviews of its new Kindle Fire tablet.
Amazon said customers are buying "well over" one million Kindles per week. This level of sales has occurred for three straight weeks, it added in a statement.
The sales numbers include the Kindle Fire tablet and all the versions of the Kindle e-reader. The company did not break out sales numbers for the Fire tablet alone.
However, Amazon executive Dave Limp said Kindle Fire sales increased week over week for each of the last three weeks.
Amazon previously said it sold "millions" of Kindles, but the company has never before given a sales number for a week, according to a spokeswoman.
The disclosure comes after a spate of negative reviews of the Kindle Fire that focused on issues such as slow response from the user interface and Web browser, the need for more privacy and child settings, and the lack of external volume control.
"The press release was very bullish and clearly a response to the few high-profile negative articles," said Ben Schachter, an analyst at Macquarie.
Amazon shares climbed 1.1 percent to $182.18 at mid-afternoon on Thursday. The stock fell to almost $170, its lowest level since March, on Wednesday.
Recent reviews and articles have been "overdone," partly because they often compare the $199 Kindle Fire to Apple Inc's iPad, which starts at $499, the analyst added.
"That's like comparing a $20,000 car with a $50,000 car," Schachter said. "These reviews certainly hurt because people read them. Will it work as well as the iPad? No."
Despite the negative coverage, Schachter is sticking to his forecast of about five million Kindle Fire sales in the fourth quarter.
Amazon said earlier this week that it plans a software upgrade to the Kindle Fire in coming weeks that will "improve performance, touch navigation, and give customers the option to choose what items display on the carousel."
The carousel refers to windows that appear on the home display of the Kindle Fire showing what applications ran most recently. Some users have complained that exposing what they last did with the device is a privacy problem.
"It's a new product that can be improved," Schachter said. "We don't think any of the problems discussed are deal breakers."

Ryan Braun may yet be cleared in his steroid case, but the incident shows that the problem still exists, and the system could use some tweaking.
MLB EXPERT MAILBAG

|
Q: What do you make of the Ryan Braun mess? It just makes me feel as if we'll never know who's juicing and who isn't.
? Brandon, New York
A: If the accusation holds up, and Braun must serve a 50-day suspension, there's no doubting that will be big hit for he and MLB to absorb.
Just when the game is on a roll ? with a captivating stretch run and postseason, plus a new labor deal that continues a period of peace ? this happens. And by a superstar player who universally is liked and respected as a stand-up guy, diligent worker and leader.
We'll give Braun his day in court, as he reportedly passed a second test immediately after the bad test result came up. And, it's highly unfortunate that the failed drug test was leaked ? when it should have remained private through the arbitration process.
But the fact remains, he failed a drug test. Which prompts a couple of thoughts: I'll give MLB credit for sticking to its ever-toughening standards, and reiterate my longstanding opinion that other major professional sports don't go to these lengths ? which only makes MLB more exposed to disillusioned fans such as yourself, Brandon.
But I also see this as a warning that cheating still is going on ? whether it's human growth hormone (which will be tested for under the new agreement), or some other method testing hasn't yet caught onto.
So that means strict policing must continue.
This also calls into question whether or not the penalties are tough enough. At the superstar level, with eight- and nine-figure contracts at stake, what's a 50-game suspension?
But if a player was banned for a season with the first offense, and banned for life for a second offense ? with any guaranteed money voided ? you'd see much less cheating, believe me.
As for Braun's 2011 NL MVP award, I believe it should be stripped if he is found guilty. Again, the penalty must fit the crime.
Q: What do you think would be the best move for the Yankees to make? We all know they need pitching, but with the age of the lineup, would it be wise to trade away some of their young talent?
? Bobby Guida, Long Valley, N.J.
A: It's a bit laughable to use the phrase 'fiscal restraint' in the same sentence with 'Yankees', but I'm beginning to buy into the idea that general manager Brian Cashman won't be making any major long-term financial additions this offseason.
If so, they won't be in the Yu Darvish posting sweepstakes. But I still feel a deal is coming for a No. 2-3 type, with John Danks and Wandy Rodriguez as the leading possibilities. I believe the Yankees would deal one from among the trio of Jesus Montero, Dellin Betances and Manny Banuelos, plus lesser prospects. But I don't see them trading two of those three.
While I'm certainly not crazy about the Yankees' chances of winning a World Series with their current rotation, their need for pitching is a bit overstated. They won 97 games and finished fourth in the AL in ERA in 2011, just .16 behind the league-leading Angels, which when you factor in the home ballparks, is basically no difference at all.Granted, the starters' ERA was too high at 4.03 (a half-run worse than league-leading Tampa's rotation). But if Phil Hughes is close to his 2010 version, and one of those younger arms emerges, things will improve even without a trade. But a deal that adds a salary in the $8-13-million range for a No. 2/3-type starter seems likely ? if not this winter, than during the 2012 season if the need remains.
Q: Will the Mets trade David Wright? Should they?
? Howard Tillman, Dacula, Ga.
A: With Jose Reyes gone, and Wright left as the only remaining star, I just don't see the Mets trading him at this point in time. If this was Kansas City or Pittsburgh, yes, the argument to deal him certainly would be stronger. And maybe that's what the Mets eventually will come to think in their very-dire situation. But that's a much-tougher proposition to sell in Queens.
That puts Wright ? at 28 and in his prime years ? in an unenviable position, as the Mets are going to be hard-pressed to match their 2011 win total of 77 in 2012, and probably 2013. But Wright is young enough that whenever the Mets get out of this deep financial abyss they've fallen into, and a new ownership group can turn it back around, he still should have a few star-caliber seasons left.
The same can't be said for the club's other two remaining big-ticket items ? 32-year-old Johan Santana ($55 million guaranteed remaining) and 33-year-old Jason Bay ($35 million guaranteed remaining).
Most likely, the Mets will be stuck with those two at least until the middle of the 2013 season, when perhaps they could be unloaded to a contender, as both would be in the last guaranteed years of their contracts.
Wright is owed $15 million this season plus a $1-million buyout if the Mets don't pick up a $16-million option for 2012. These days, that's not really a huge obligation. So I believe Wright will be an All-Star-caliber player stuck on a bad team for awhile.

The White House is bringing onboard high-octane Clinton administration veteran Jennifer Palmieri, a top official at the progressive Center for American Progress think tank, to beef up its communications unit heading into 2012, POLITICO has learned.
Palmieri, who currently serves as president of CAP?s political action fund and as a senior vice president at the parent organization, replaces former deputy communications director Jennifer Psaki, who left for the private sector earlier this fall.
Continue ReadingOne Democratic insider described the hire as a ?wow? because Palmieri is a true Obama outsider with a reputation as a canny political strategist. She?ll have instant credibility within the tight-knit West Wing with responsibilities that will expand well beyond her title, administration officials say.
Obama?s top aides, led by communications director Dan Pfeiffer, have been in talks with Palmieri for about a month.
Palmieri has deep connections to the Washington press corps, having served as DNC national press secretary during the 2002 cycle and John Edwards? top spokesperson two years later. She has even deeper links to top players in the Obama administration.
Palmieri began her career working for Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, then a California congressman, and went on to serve as a special assistant to Panetta when he became Bill Clinton?s chief of staff when Clinton was president. She was one of the few senior staffers to spend eight years in the Clinton White House, the last three years as a deputy press secretary.
Her relationship with Panetta will come in handy as the White House and Pentagon negotiate the deepest cuts to the Pentagon in a generation, hundreds of billions in possible reductions that Panetta says would render the military ?a hollow force.?
Palmieri?s interactions within the Edwards family were more complex. She was an Edwards true believer in 2004, but served as a part-time consultant in 2008 as she became increasingly disturbed by the candidate?s personal shortcomings. At the same time, her friendship with Elizabeth Edwards, who was dying of cancer, deepened.
Palmieri was one of a handful of friends Elizabeth Edwards, who died a year ago Wednesday, leaned on at the end of her life.
?We shared many, many laughs in 2004. But the 2008 cycle was very different,? Palmieri wrote in a Jan. 2012 Washington Post tribute to Edwards.
?It is hard to explain, even to fathom, how difficult these past three years have been on her,? she wrote. ?I understand that if your husband betrayed you as badly as hers did, you might have a hard time knowing whom to trust? When she reads this, I know that she will point out the things I said that are wrong or unfair, and express particular dismay at any sentences I ended with prepositions. I love her for that.?

Stocks turned mostly higher in midafternoon trading Tuesday as the S&P 500 climbed back into positive territory after bouncing around earlier.
Approaching 2 p.m. ET, the Dow Jones industrial average was up 0.5 percent, the S&P rose 0.1 percent and the Nasdaq traded 0.3 percent lower.
Investors seemed unclear of what S&Ps Monday threat to eurozone countries would mean. The rating agency warned 15 countries that it could ?downgrade their credit ratings within the next 90 days. Rumor of the announcement dampened a rally Monday.
"Markets have been pricing in an environment that's less than AAA, and the fact that it has already been incorporated into most investors' thinking is why we're not seeing a bigger sell-off today," Leo Grohowski, chief investment officer at BNY Mellon Wealth Management in New York, told Reuters.
"Still, the timing of a warning like this is never completely expected," added Grohowski, who helps oversee $170 billion.

BAGHDAD ? Weeks before the U.S. pullout, Iraq's prime minister confidently predicted Saturday that his country will achieve stability and remain independent of its giant neighbor Iran even without an American troop presence.
Nouri al-Maliki also warned of civil war in Iran's ally Syria if Bashar Assad falls ? a view that puts him closer to Tehran's position and at odds with Washington. The foreign policy pronouncement indicates that Iraq is emerging from the shadows of U.S. influence in a way unforeseen when U.S.-led forces invaded eight years ago to topple Saddam Hussein.
"The situation in Syria is dangerous," al-Maliki told The Associated Press during an interview at his office in a former Saddam-era palace in Baghdad's Green Zone. "Things should be dealt with appropriately so that the spring in Syria does not turn into a winter."
The Obama administration has been outspoken in its criticism of Assad's bloody crackdown on protests that the U.N. says has killed more than 4,000 people so far, the bloodiest in a wave of uprisings that have been dubbed the Arab Spring.
Iraq has been much more circumspect and abstained from key Arab League votes suspending Syria's membership and imposing sanctions on the country. That has raised concern that Baghdad is succumbing to Iranian pressure to protect Assad's regime. Tehran is Syria's main backer.
Al-Maliki insisted that Iraq will chart its own policies in the future according to national interests, not the dictates of Iran or any other country.
Some U.S. officials have suggested that Iranian influence in Iraq would inevitably grow once American troops depart.
Both countries have Shiite majorities and are dominated by Shiite political groups. Many Iraqi politicians spent time in exile in Iran under Saddam's repressive regime, and one of al-Maliki's main allies ? anti-American cleric Muqtada al-Sadr ? is believed to spend most of his time in Iran.
"Iraq is not a follower of any country," al-Maliki said. He pointed out several areas in which Iraq had acted against Iran's desires, including the signing of the security agreement in 2008 that required all U.S. forces to leave Iraq by the end of this year. Iran had been pushing for all American troops to be out of the country even sooner.
"Through our policies, Iraq was not and will not be a follower of another country's policies," he said.
But he also took pains to emphasize that Iraq did want to maintain good relations with Iran as the two countries share extensive cultural, economical and religious ties.
"Clearly, we are no enemy to Iran and we do not accept that some who have problems with Iran would use us as a battlefield. Some want to fight Iran with Iraqi resources as has happened in the past. We do not allow Iran to use us against others that Iran has problems with, and we do not allow others to use us against Iran," he said.
The prime minister defended his country's stance when it comes to how to address the instability roiling neighboring Syria right now.
The U.N.'s top human rights official said this week that Syria is in a state of civil war and that more than 4,000 people have been killed since March.
Al-Maliki said Iraq believes the Syrian people's rights should be protected and that his government has told the Syrian regime that the age of one party and one sect running the country is over. Syria is ruled by a minority Alawite regime, an offshoot of Shiism, that rules over a Sunni Muslim majority.
The Iraqi prime minister even said that members of the Syrian opposition had recently asked to come to Iraq, and that his government would meet with them. But he distanced himself from calls for Assad's ouster, warning that could plunge the country into civil war.
"The killing or removal of President Bashar in any way will explode into an internal struggle between two groups and this will have an impact on the region," al-Maliki said.
"My opinion ? I also lived in Syria for more than 16 years ? is that it will end with civil war and this civil war will lead to alliances in the region. Because we are a country that suffered from the civil war of a sectarian background, we fear for the future of Syria and the whole region," he said.
Al-Maliki also insisted his forces were ready to take over security during a wide-ranging discussion on where his country stands ahead of the Dec. 31 departure of all American troops.
"Nothing has changed with the withdrawal of the American forces from Iraq on the security level because basically it has been in our hands," he said.
The U.S. withdrawal has occurred in stages, with the American military pulling out of the cities in 2008, leaving the soldiers largely confined to bases as Iraqi security forces took the lead. About 13,000 U.S. troops are still in the country, down from a one-time high of about 170,000.
Al-Maliki said he was grateful to the United States for overthrowing Saddam.
"We appreciate that, no doubt," the prime minister said, adding he was not worried about a resumption of the type of sectarian warfare that pushed his own country to the brink of civil war in the years following the 2003 U.S.-led invasion.
On the contrary, he said violence would decline because the Americans' departure would remove one of the main reasons for attacks.
"What was taking place during the presence of the American forces will decrease in the period after the withdrawal," he said. "Some people find a pretext in the presence of the American forces to justify their acts, but now what justification will they come up with?"

The No.20 Clemson Tigers (9-3, 6-2 ACC) and the No.5 Virginia Tech Hokies (11-1, 7-1 ACC) will do battle in the 2011 NCAA college football predictions ACC Championship Game at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina on Saturday at 8:00pm ET on ESPN. Clemson beat Virginia Tech earlier this season 23-3 and the Hokies would love nothing more than to get the last laugh in a game that holds a lot more weight than their regular season meeting did. All the trends are pointing towards a Virginia Tech victory here, as the Hokies have won their last 14 games played in the state of North Carolina. On top of that, Virginia Tech has also won five of their last six meetings against Clemson, while the Tigers have lost three of their last four games overall, Virginia Tech is making its fourth appearance in the ACC title game and they will be entering this game on a seven game winning streak. Most of the free college football predictions for this game have the Hokies winning this game and covering as 7-point favorites and although I expect Virginia Tech to be crowned as the 2011 ACC Champions, I see a much closer game than that.
Sophomore quarterback Logan Thomas has been the key for Virginia Tech this season and it has been obvious during the Hokies? seven-game winning streak. Thomas has thrown for 14 touchdowns, while adding nine through the ground and his 10 overall rushing touchdowns in the 2011 NCAA football season are a new record for a quarterback during the Frank Beamer era. The Tigers were also benefiting from some great quarterback play out of redshirt sophomore Tajh Boyd earlier on the year, but, that is explosiveness has disappeared in recent weeks. Last week against South Carolina, Boyd was 11 for 30 for just 83 yards and that type of performance is not going to make it any easier for the Tigers to cover their NCAA college football odds as 7-point underdogs in this game.
The Hokies have to prepare for this game as if they are going to get the Tajh Boyd that made their lives impossible earlier in the year. This is a young Clemson team that has played 29 freshmen in total this season and although that is an advantage for the Hokies, Virginia Tech cannot act like they are going to win this game because of they are better on paper. In Virginia Tech?s history, they have twice before had a rematch against a team that they lost to during the regular season, and both times it was against Boston College during the 2007 and 2008 seasons. The Hokies won both of those games and I expect them to keep that trend alive with a win against Clemson on Saturday night, although it won?t be as easy as some odds-makers are predicting that it will be.
